5 Ways to Elevate the Wardrobe You Already Have

Have you ever looked into your closet and thought you have a bunch of super cute clothes, but your wardrobe just isn’t quite pulled together in the way you want it to be? If so, you’re definitely not alone. With these few small changes and additions, you can turn your existing wardrobe into the closet of your dreams.

Add finishing pieces

Picture this: you’re dressed in a cute pair of straight-leg denim, a knit wrap top, a simple shiny gold pendant necklace, and a classic pair of black Chelsea boots. You look in the mirror, and you’re happy with what you see, but you’re not blown away. How do you take the outfit to that next level?

In cases such as these, the biggest culprit is often an absence of finishing pieces. A finishing piece is anything in addition to the essentials (top, bottom, and shoes). To elevate your outfit, throw on a cute jacket, cardigan, vest, blazer, or hat. You’ll instantly look – and feel – more pulled together.

Don’t shy away from accessories

Accessorizing your outfit is one of the easiest ways to change your outfit from a look to a lewk. Accessories are also a great way to showcase your personal style. If you aren’t afraid of color and drawing attention, a big statement necklace is the way to go. For those with a more classic style, simple gold or silver earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings will help pull the outfit together.

Not a fan of jewelry at all? You can still accessorize with a belt on top of your cardigan around your waist or a cute scarf.

Consider your color story

When you look into your closet, what colors do you see? Are most of your pieces one of three or four colors, or is your wardrobe representing the entire rainbow? If you have lots of different colors, consider whether you’re actually wearing all of them. If there are certain colors you gravitate towards, it may be worth considering donating the ones that don’t get a lot of wear.

It may also be that the items you’re rarely wearing just don’t go with the items you have. What items would you need to make an outfit out of it? If you think investing in a few more pieces to make those items work is worth it, make note of it on your next shopping trip.

Take inventory of your basics

A wardrobe missing basic pieces in neutral colors will always be a challenge to style. You should have a few long-sleeved tops, short-sleeved tops, sleeveless tops, pants, and finishing pieces in neutral colors to complete your wardrobe year-round.

It’s worth investing a little more money in these pieces, as you’ll wear them often and for many years to come.

Stay true to your personal style

Being fashionable doesn’t mean following the current trends. To dress fashionably and originally, stay true to the styles and colors you love to wear. If you simply can’t stand blazers, don’t force yourself to wear one. At the end of the day, the only person who has to love what you’re wearing is you.
