The number of hospital admissions has fallen in the US. At the same time, outpatient services have become increasingly commonplace. As healthcare provision shifts from inpatients to outpatients, this infographic offers an insight into the changing landscape of the health sector.
Hospital admissions declined by 2% between 2012 and 2013. In the same period, the number of outpatient visits rose by 787 million. These figures underline a significant change in the provision of healthcare and a focus on treating patients quickly and efficiently utilizing flexible services that are not always directly linked to hospital departments. To make the shift from inpatient to outpatient possible, several measures have been introduced to modernize healthcare systems.
One of the most influential developments is investment in nurse-led health centers and community healthcare services. Patients who don’t require inpatient treatment no longer have to go to inpatient facilities purely because there are no viable alternatives. Construction projects are now focused on outpatient services and facilities, and many patients are able to receive care without traveling long distances or staying overnight in hospital. There are currently more than 200 nurse-managed health centers serving over 37 states.
Technology also has a vital role to play, with medical professionals able to take advantage of innovations that promote efficiency, enhance patient experience and cut costs. Mobile technology enables staff to work on the go, while digital records are easily accessible. Patients are also able to capitalize on technology that gives them more control over their health and the care they receive. Telehealth is particularly beneficial for those living in rural areas.
