Ideas for First Dates: The Dos and Don’ts

First dates are nerve-racking for everyone. It can be hard to know what will make your date feel at ease and how you should act when you’re with them. But don’t worry, here is a compiled list of dos and don’ts that will help you navigate the world of first dates.

Exes and Sexuality

Do not ask questions about their exes or past relationships. It’s uncomfortable for both parties involved. Do tell jokes if they seem self-conscious. This is usually an instant confidence booster. Don’t assume anything about their sexuality, no matter who they are interested in dating now or have dated before.

Dress Code

Do ask questions about their job and interests if they seem to be struggling with them. Do dress up slightly for a first date. Going so far as dressing nicer than you usually would on an average day really help your chances of making it past the second or third date. Don’t show off too much skin, especially if you are not comfortable showing that much skin in public. If someone cannot respect what is covered by clothing, they might feel entitled to see more later, which could lead to sexual harassment further down the line.

Complements And Past

Do compliment your date throughout the night, but do not go overboard because this may come across as insincere or disingenuous. Do try new things together, like exploring places nearby that neither of you has seen before or double date. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their past. Many people are open to talking about it these days. Most will not judge you for your curiosity if it comes across as genuine.

Unique And Thoughtful

Do plan exciting dates like finding a fun night market with local food or taking them on an adventure through the city streets that they’ve never been down before. But, don’t forget the small details like always remembering to bring something along in case of emergencies (like gum) and offering up everything from your seat at dinner or the movies, etc. It is usually another way of showing sincerity, so don’t feel bad if they decline but still offer again just in. Also, avoid topics such as religion, politics, and sex.

Trying The New And Respecting Boundaries

Do be yourself around your date. Do try new things together, like trying out the new steak restaurant or even going on a hike through your local park. Also, don’t forget about respecting their privacy boundaries by asking before posting anywhere online where others might see it, like on their social media pages.

Listen Intently

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about them, and make sure you listen carefully when they answer. The more information you can get out of your date, the easier it will be for both parties to know the other’s intentions. For example, one might be looking for something serious or long-term. At the same time, another might just want a casual relationship that lasts only as long as maybe 2 months.

When it comes to choosing a date, you can go with something romantic or adventurous. You could even combine the two and do some kind of movie night-outing. The truth is that there are no rules when it comes to first dates, and while some may be more popular than others (dinner and drinks seem like an obvious choice), don’t assume that’s best for everyone.
